Northern Virginia businesses are being challenged to show their holiday spirit by participating in the First-Annual Holiday Food Drive at Reston Town Center, taking place Thursday, December 16. Sponsored by Perkowitz+Ruth Architects, the one-day food drive aims to collect 10,000 pounds of non-perishable holiday food items to benefit Reston Interfaith, a local social services organization.

Pacific Theatres Glendale 18 at The Americana at Brand, designed by Perkowitz+Ruth Architects, captured a 2010 ICSC Design & Development Silver Award in the Retail Store design category. The annual design awards, which honor the best and brightest of the country’s retail real estate, were presented at an awards luncheon held Dec. 2 during the CenterBuild Conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

Members of the Los Angeles Chapter of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) rolled up their sleeves on Nov. 30 to help restore the Solano Community Garden in Downtown Los Angeles. Volunteers helped plant fall vegetable seeds and plants, in addition to assisting with the grading and restoration of the hill side to help prevent soil erosion where new rain barrels were installed.

The Conservation Corps of Long Beach (CCLB) opened the doors to its newest facility, the Environmental Education Center, with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony held on Nov. 12. Located in Signal Hill, Calif., the Studio One Eleven-designed building will house 85-90% of CCLB’s recycling operations.

The Senior Artists Colony, an affordable housing development of Meta Housing Corporation designed by Studio One Eleven, captured the 2010 SAGE Award in the ‘On the Boards’ category. Award winners were honored at an Awards Gala held on Nov. 4 at The Turnip Rose in Costa Mesa, Calif.

In support of National Make a Difference Day on October 23, Perkowitz+Ruth Architects’ James Yow and Vern Morehouse volunteered to rehabilitate a Long Beach home on Junipero Avenue. The effort was organized by Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit organization that rehabilitates homes for low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities.

Plaza Pacoima, an urban retail development in Pacoima, Calif., has been awarded LEED® Gold Certification for the overall development by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). Perkowitz+Ruth Architects provided full scope architectural services, as well as LEED certification support for the 343,000-square-foot development, which features a retail pad building, Best Buy, and Costco.

Community leaders, students and alumni gathered on Sunday, Oct. 17, to participate in the Decommissioning Ceremony for Our Savior Church at the University of Southern California’s Catholic Center. The ceremony, marking the close of the current campus church, was followed by a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Our Savior Church and USC Caruso Catholic Center.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, the Washington DC Office of Perkowitz+Ruth Architects volunteered for Community Improvement Day with the DC Chapter of the Building Industry Association (DCBIA). More than 500 volunteers worked to clean up the Rhode Island Section of the Metropolitan Branch Trail – a barren stretch of land positioned along railroad tracks and a few yards North of the Metro Station.
